In honor of Memorial Day, text from a letter from my grandfather to his parents during WWII:

May 6, 1945

Dear Folks,

Today has been by far the most important day of my life so far. We released 18,000 Jews from a Concentration Camp. The details are indescribable and even as I think of it all now I can't believe it. All the things you read about don't begin to describe the horror of it all. Those walking skeletons didn't seem at all human any more. Mom you would be proud of me if you saw me today...

I got rid of all my cigarettes and candy. I am proud to be a solider, proud to be in the Infantry and now I know why I fight...

I may not be much of a hero ma but I sure felt like one today. You would be proud to see me today...

Love
Danny
